Does anyone think your computer will someday be worth more than you paid for it? So why the obsession with ownership? If you think about it, computing is really more of a utility than a thing. Software is much the same, most of us don't buy programs in boxes anymore, we spend our time using free cloud-based services like gmail, facebook, and twitter. Even professional tools for word processing, point of sale, and accounting are slowly moving into the cloud (though likely not for free). Data back-up is moving online too, as is support.
People need help as much as they need a "box". The traditional concept of buying a PC, software, a back-up drive, and then paying through the nose for training or support is fading quickly.
